Housing Market in Bonn

Did you quickly find an apartment in Bonn back then?
The lack of affordable housing is a serious issue. Most students in Bonn didn’t grow up here and can’t rely on family housing — or choose not to anymore. Many are left searching for a place on their own.

Student dormitories are often the first option, but they don’t have space for everyone. With twice as many applications every year, as total places available, numerous students are fearing that they won’t have a roof over their heads when the semester starts. Even those lucky enough to secure a spot, don’t have it easy: some dormitories face severe safety issues. We are committed to ensuring that dormitories remain affordable, become safer, and – most importantly – are available to all students who need them.

In 2025, the plans for the new Endenich campus will be finalized. We want to ensure that the student perspective plays a decisive role in the design of the planned dormitories. We’re calling for more affordable student housing, including the development of additional dormitories to meet growing demand.

Meanwhile, much of the city’s housing stock sits unused. We want to support projects that make use of all available space, including those where senior residents offer their vacant apartments to students. These initiatives create secure housing for students while providing mutual benefits to the community.

But we can’t wait for long-term solutions to address the immediate crisis. That’s why we’re advocating for emergency shelters to be established in 2025. These shelters would offer a lifeline to students who suddenly find themselves without housing or are unable to secure a place to live on short notice.
